Annual Honor Devotional to Be Held Feb. 1
An instructor at the Buena Vista Institute of Religion, a Southern Virginia University student and an alumna will give addresses at the annual honor devotional on Friday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center at Southern Virginia University.
The keynote speaker is Matthew Rasmussen, a full-time instructor at the Buena Vista Institute of Religion. He received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Utah, and both a master’s degree and a doctorate in history from the University of Lancaster in Lancashire, England. He has been an employee of the Church Educational System for ten years, serving in the capacities of full-time seminary instructor and seminary principal before his current position at the Buena Vista Institute of Religion, which he began in 2011. He and his wife, Jessica, live in Buena Vista, Va., and have four children.
Greg Turner (‘14), a junior majoring in computer science, will speak on his perspective of the principles of the Code of Honor as a recent transfer student to the university. He plays center on the men’s junior varsity basketball team and performs as a member of The Fading Point.
Jasmin Johnson Sloan (’11) will speak on the Code of Honor and how it has shaped her life, both as a student at Southern Virginia and after her graduation. Sloan was an art major and history minor as well as a point guard for the women’s basketball team while at Southern Virginia.
Community members and Southern Virginia faculty, staff and students are invited to hear forum and devotional speakers each Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center. Recordings of past forum and devotional speeches may be accessed online.
