Preview: Southern Virginia University Theatre Brings Beloved Musical Classic “Cinderella” to the Stage
The Southern Virginia University Theatre program is pleased to present the Broadway adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s “Cinderella,” a classic story of dreams, love, and new beginnings, on April 11, 13, and 19–20 in the Performing Arts Center.
“This version of “Cinderella” goes more into the depth of all the characters, which I was really excited to explore with our amazing cast,” said Kim Hirt, who serves as the guest director.
“We really want to dig into these characters and tell this important story of showing kindness and doing what’s right. And it’s a musical, which we were all excited about.”
Following the well-known and beloved tale of a young woman living a life of servitude by her cruel stepmother, Cinderella dreams of having a better life. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, she is transformed into an elegant young lady and is able to attend the ball and meet the Prince. There, Cinderella is able to open the Prince’s eyes to the injustices his prime minister wrecks on the kingdom.
With a cast of 23 student actors, Kim Hirt, director of the local Blue Forrest Theatre Academy, serves as the guest director, with Assistant Professor of Music Megan Mason as the conductor of the orchestra, and Assistant Professor of Music Mackenzie Romriell is the musical director.
With evening showings at 7:30 each performance night, matinee showings at 1 p.m. will also be available on April 13 and 20. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite with general admission $12 and senior tickets $10. Concessions will also be available for purchase.
