Buena Vista, Va. — VP of Brand & Technology Bryce Pendleton has named Dale Murri the director of information technology. With nearly 20 years of IT experience, many of which in a university setting, Murri will oversee the university’s IT department, including AV services, broadcasting, and university websites.

“Technology is a tool. We have it with us all day, every day—so making sure it’s available and benefiting the campus is a central part of IT,” said Murri. “I want to make sure the students and employees have what they need to be set up for success. If technology can be invisible and universal, it means that teachers can teach better and students can learn better, and it eliminates any tech barriers that could arise.”

At Southern Virginia University, Murri will focus on evaluating, improving, and optimizing the systems, services, and tools used by the university, as well as ensuring optimal user experience for students, faculty, and staff.

“In the past, you had to have multiple services to accomplish everything a university needed, which can be a hassle to work with,” said Murri. “Now, one platform can provide multiple services, so one of the things I’ll be doing is standardizing and reducing the software we use and finding the best fits for us and our goals as a university.”

From 2008–22, Murri worked at Brigham Young University in several tech positions, including lead web developer and system administrator and engineer. During that time, he managed the migration of all the university’s courses to a new learning management system, converted websites to a mobile friendly responsive design, and was the lead developer for the International Center for Law and Religion website.

Prior to joining Southern Virginia University, Murri worked as a linux system administrator for End Point Corporation for two years. He also taught an introductory course in general hardware maintenance at Brigham Young University–Idaho from 2020–22. He served as an IT specialist for MultiLing Corporation from 2006–08 and as a software tester for Corda Technologies in 2006.

“While it’s definitely important to make sure you’re using the right software and are being financially responsible, the bottom line is making sure that the students, faculty, and staff here have what they need to have the best technological experience,” said Murri. “Our goal is to solve, replace, or remove anything that is a hindrance for people and their ability to do their jobs.”

Murri received his bachelor’s degree in information technology and his master’s degree in public administration from Brigham Young University. He and his wife, Kara, have six children.
