Mourning a Tragic Loss for Our Community

Dear Southern Virginia University Community,

We are deeply saddened to share the heartbreaking news that one of our current students, Matthew McCubbins, and his dear wife and alumna, Soriah (Lunt) McCubbins (‘23), were involved in a serious car accident last night. Matthew is currently recovering in a nearby hospital, but devastatingly, Soriah passed away as a result of the incident.

We mourn this tragic loss with the McCubbins and their friends and families and pray for Matthew’s continued recovery. During this sensitive time, we respect their privacy and invite all in our community to offer prayers of love and support on their behalf. We also realize that this news may impact many in our community differently. Should you need to speak with anyone, we invite you to reach out to your local church leaders and our wellness services. To connect, please call 540-261-8474 or email counseling@svu.edu.

Events like this are hard to understand and process, but may we all find comfort in our Savior Jesus Christ and the words of the scriptures; we do not know the meaning of all things, but we do know that God loves His children (1 Nephi 11:17). We look forward to the promised day when “God shall wipe away all tears… and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain” (Revelations 21:4).

In the face of this tragedy, friends and family of the McCubbins have created a GoFundMe to raise funds for funeral and medical expenses. If you would like to contribute financial support, please visit https://gofund.me/da349394.

Sincerely,

Southern Virginia University
