Southern Virginia University is Open for Fall 2020
Today the Office of the President issued the following letter:
Dear Southern Virginia University Community,
Virginia has just introduced the new legal requirements for opening college campuses this fall. Our current Southern Virginia University 2020 Launch Plan meets or exceeds every health and safety requirement, so we’re thrilled that we can now officially announce:
We will open for classes, on campus, on schedule, in late August!
We anticipate starting Fall semester on schedule on August 24, but will finalize and announce the specific schedule before the end of this week.
This historic year will also commemorate our 25th year as a school. This will be a once-in-a-generation year, with new experiences and opportunities that may never come again. Although many schools are seeing enrollment drops for this fall, we’ve received more applications than ever before. While we’re working to find ways to safely accommodate as many students as possible, our small classes will be even smaller with new social distancing guidelines. This will be great for learning and personal interaction, but it will limit our capacity to expand and accept all the qualified students who will want to come this year. So get ready! And please apply and get registered if you haven’t already, before we are full for fall.
This campus is our home. Our goal is for our campus home to be as safe and healthy as anywhere else our students could be. We’re working around the clock to create great new strategies for classes, athletics, performing arts, campus life, social life, and church. Along with following best practices for social distancing, we’re adding new levels of the most advanced surface cleaning and air filtering purifying technology available to our buildings, and expanding professional health and wellness education and support on campus and in connection to area medical resources. And as an Apple Distinguished School—an honor awarded to fewer than 1% of all colleges—we’re perfectly positioned to use our state-of-the-art Apple mobile digital technology platform, and personalized learning model, to minimize virus exposure and help keep students and professors safe and well connected, even better than before.
We can’t wait for Fall 2020 to kick off our best year ever—with special events, a thousand new friends, and more opportunities than ever. Watch for more exciting news between now and the time school starts. We’ll be thrilled to have you join our friends, faculty, coaches, and family here in our home, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We can’t wait to see you in August!
