By Rachel Moore, Buena Vista City Director of Economic Development & Tourism

Southern Virginia University, the Buena Vista faith community, and the City of Buena Vista are hosting Buena Vista CommUNITY Day to Serve on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018. Approximately 1,000 volunteers from the university and community will be assisting with volunteer projects throughout the city.

Volunteers will work on projects including general landscaping and pruning at city facilities, repairs at local playgrounds, painting pavilions at Glen Maury Park, and even power washing the iconic wall surrounding Parry McCluer Middle School.

“This is an opportunity for every person in the Buena Vista and larger community to invest their time and energy and work alongside their neighbors to bless our citizens and city staff,” says  Rev. Bryon LePere, Pastor, Buena Vista Baptist Church.

Participants are encouraged to share photos of their work on social media throughout the event, utilizing the hashtag #BVserves.

At the culmination of the CommUNITY Day to Serve event, there will be an ice cream and cookie social on Oct. 9 from 4 -6 p.m. in the 2100 block of Forest Avenue. Volunteers and other community members are all invited to attend.

CommUNITY Day is sponsored by a generous gift from Columbia Gas of Virginia, which is providing funding to assist with supplies necessary for the projects.
