At the annual state of the university address, Southern Virginia University President Paul K. Sybrowsky announced the creation of the first annual 5K for 5K, which will take place on Saturday, March 16.

Participation in the 5K — whether through running, walking, finding a donor or volunteering in some other way — will serve as the 2013 President’s Challenge at Southern Virginia. In addition, the city of Buena Vista, Va., is cosponsoring the 5K and invites local citizens to participate in this community event.

The goal of the 5K for 5K is to raise $5,000 for each participant who runs five kilometers. These funds will go to support education in the Buena Vista area — including scholarships at Southern Virginia and improvements at the Parry McCluer High School Athletic Complex.

“The 5K for 5K was really inspired by my wife,” said President Sybrowsky. “We were talking about ways that we could assist others to know about the mission of the university and provide scholarship funds for our students. She suggested a 5K race, and as we were talking, I said ‘we could do 5K for 5K: $5,000 for 5 kilometers.’ This way, we can involve the students in the fundraising process because students on our campus are not spectators at events, they are participants.”

President Sybrowsky will lead those who walk the 5K course and his wife, Lynne, will lead the runners. There also will be an option to run a 10K course. Additionally, there will be an optional “Powder Lane,” in which participants will be decorated with colorful powder as they run or walk the course.

Participants and donors can register, donate and find more information at svu.edu/5k or by calling 540–261–8400. The 5K will begin at 10:30 a.m. on March 16 at The Fields at Southern Virginia University.
