Professor, Musician to Give Musical Forum Jan. 25

Dr. James Leva, a musician and Southern Virginia University professor, and his daughter, Vivian Leva, will give a musical forum on Friday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center at Southern Virginia.

Leva is a visiting assistant professor of French at Southern Virginia who teaches both French and Western literature. He also is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter who specializes in music of the Appalachian tradition. He currently tours and performs with the band Purgatory Mountain.

He also has taught at many other colleges and universities, including Washington and Lee, the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Virginia.

Leva received a bachelor’s degree in English at Washington and Lee University, and both a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Virginia. Leva was a Fulbright Scholar, studying in France for four years.

His daughter, Vivian, also is a musician, singer, and songwriter.

Community members and Southern Virginia faculty, staff and students are invited to hear forum and devotional speakers each Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center. Recordings of past forum and devotional speeches may be accessed online.
