New Lighting System Donated to The Fields
President Paul K. Sybrowsky today announced the installation of a new lighting system for The Fields at Southern Virginia University in the annual state of the university address.
“This is very significant for the school as a whole,” said Scott Doxey, who serves the university as both athletic director and vice president of operations. “Having lights will give us more flexibility — we will be able to have competitions later in the day, which will help us, as well as visiting teams who also are concerned about having their student-athletes away from class too much.”
The installation of the new lighting system is now complete and university officials are currently working with Dominion Virginia Power and city officials to begin providing enough electricity to power the new lighting system. Doxey said that they plan to have the lights completely functional for the upcoming softball season.
The donation of the new lighting system brings the university’s capital campaign — with the theme “Advancing the Genius of Small” — $310,000 closer toward its goal to raise $50,000,000.
“Some of the fixtures came as a donation from Aliana Development Company in Houston,” said Dr. Richard G. Whitehead, vice president of institutional advancement at Southern Virginia. “This donation was spurred by Chad Blackham, the father of two of our female soccer players. The remainder, which was a cash gift, came from a private donor who recently visited our campus and was so impressed with our students and athletic fields that he agreed to help us complete the lighting project.”
