Religious Historian to Speak About Mormonism at Forum Feb. 17
Matthew Bowman, author of “The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith,” will give an address entitled, “Eternal Progression: Mormonism and American Progressivism,” on Friday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center at Southern Virginia University.
Bowman is the associate editor of “Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.” He also is a visiting assistant professor of religion at Hampden-Sydney College.
In 2011, Bowman received his doctorate in American religious history from Georgetown University. His dissertation, “The Urban Pulpit: Evangelicals and the City in New York, 1880–1930,” was funded by the prestigious Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. He also holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in American history from the University of Utah.
His work on American evangelicism and Mormonism has appeared in, among other places, Religion and American Culture: A Journal of Interpretation, Journal of the Early Republic, and The New Republic. He currently resides in Farmville, Va.
