2012-13 Tuition, Room and Board
The Southern Virginia University administration today announced the tuition and room and board costs for the 2012–13 academic year.
Southern Virginia’s tuition will increase by 3.3 percent in fall 2012, which is much lower than last year’s average increase at universities nationwide. (This year’s national average increase is not yet known because not all colleges have announced their tuition rates.) Last year, the average public university raised tuition by 8.3 percent — with 20 percent of full-time students at public four-year institutions attending a school that raised tuition by 12 percent or more. Meanwhile, the average nonprofit private university raised tuition by 4.5 percent last year, according to the College Board’s “Trends in College Pricing” report.
“The outcome of a Southern Virginia education is more value for each tuition dollar invested by a student and his or her parents,” said Acting President Richard Whitehead. “Our small classes, excellent and caring faculty, combined with an LDS environment and many opportunities to participate in curricular and extracurricular activities make this a truly unique educational experience. Still, we do our best to keep the cost as low as we can. To that end, at Southern Virginia we offset the price of a private, liberal arts education through generous institutional scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid.”
The announcement brings the sticker price for full-time Southern Virginia students to $9,450 per semester, a $300 increase. The actual tuition cost for most students is much lower, based on the more than $5 million in merit, need-based, talent and returned missionary aid awarded by the university to students each year.
Including the coming year, Southern Virginia’s average tuition increase for the last five years is 2.8 percent.

On-Campus Housing
On-campus housing rates will increase slightly for 2012–13, while continuing to provide incremental privileges and decreased costs for upperclassmen. These costs include room, utilities and Internet access per semester.
First-year students — $1,700
Sophomores — $1,500
Juniors — $1,250
Seniors –$1,150
All students living in on-campus housing also will pay a $50 fee for unlimited use of laundry facilities.
Additionally, the cost of both of the university’s meal plans will increase by $100 per semester for a total of $1,100 for the Campus Cash plan and $1,600 for Dining Dollars Plus — which includes unlimited meals in the dining hall and $150 of campus cash to be used in Jonzzey’s Café, the bookstore, the mailroom and other places on campus.
Summer Term Tuition and Housing
Tuition for summer terms in 2012, which is deeply discounted, will increase by $10 for a total of $255 per credit hour.
Summer term housing will now be offered at a weekly rate of $90, roughly $360 each month.
The laundry fee for the summer terms will remain $25 per term.
