The Southern Virginia University Theatre Program will present Sherman L. Sergel’s “Twelve Angry Jurors,” an adaptation of the film “Twelve Angry Men” by Reginald Rose, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12, and the following weekend, Feb. 18 and 19, in Chandler Hall.

In this adaptation of the classic 1957 film starring Henry Fonda, Sergel adapts the lines to include a mixed cast of men and women. The entire play takes place in a jury room, where

12 jurors decide the innocence or guilt of a teenage boy accused of murder.

Although the play leads the audience through the details of the case, “Twelve Angry Jurors” is more about justice and humanity than the case itself.

“There’s something compelling to audiences about this particular story,” said Robert Stoddard, the play’s director. “Plus, every role is wonderful for the actors to play so rehearsals have been very exciting for the cast.”

“I really enjoy that the rehearsal process is such a quick, professional experience,” said Richard Templeman — a senior, theatre major who transferred to Southern Virginia from Brigham Young University-Idaho this semester. “I think that audiences will really identify with the twelve, distinct, realistic characters.”

Templeman’s character, a Russian immigrant, is just one of the varied, engaging characters that capture human nature and explore ethical issues — including race, class, and gender discrimination. From the largest to the smallest, each role is significant and gives each actor an opportunity to create a vivid, interesting character.

“The play remains as relevant today as it was in 1957,” said Stoddard. “It helps audiences remember this country’s founding principles of justice and the inherent goodness that exists in mankind.”

The show opens on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Chandler Hall. General Admission is $7. Admission for senior citizens is $5. Tickets will be available at the door prior to each night’s performance and can also be purchased through Southern Virginia student financial services at 540–261–8405.
