Acting President Richard G. Whitehead to Speak at Devotional Sept. 16

Southern Virginia University Acting President Richard G. Whitehead will give a devotional address on Friday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center at Southern Virginia University.

Whitehead has served as the university’s vice president of institutional advancement since 2003. On August 15, 2011, he began serving as acting president. He previously practiced dentistry and served as the executive director of institutional advancement at Dixie State College.

He has served Dixie State College as co-founder and member of the National Advisory Council, president of the Alumni Association, member of the board of trustees and president of the college’s foundation. Additionally, since 1976 he has served as a member of the Creighton University School of Dentistry Board.

He received an associate degree from Dixie State College, a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, a doctorate of dental surgery from Creighton University and completed an internship in oral surgery at the University of Maryland.

Whitehead and his wife, Launa, presided over the England Bristol and England Birmingham Missions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for a combined total of three years. He previously served as bishop of the Buena Vista University Fifth Ward. He and Launa have six children and 18 grandchildren and reside in Buena Vista, Va.

Community members and Southern Virginia faculty, staff and students are invited to hear forum and devotional speakers each Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center. Recordings of past forum and devotional speeches may be accessed online.
