Summer Term Enrollment Up 15 Percent
Southern Virginia University’s summer term enrollment is up 15 percent over last year.
Enrollment for May term was 178 — a nine-percent increase from last May’s 164. Seventy-seven students are enrolled in classes for June term, which is a 13-percent increase from last year’s 68. June enrollment is up 48 percent when compared to the 2008.
Southern Virginia held its first ever August term in 2009, with 79 students enrolled. This year’s August enrollment has already reached 104 — a 32-percent increase.
“Summer terms combine all the benefits of our small classes with the addition of discounted tuition,” said Paul S. Edwards, Southern Virginia’s executive vice president and provost. “Our students who take advantage of this great opportunity can work toward early graduation, minimizing the cost of their undergraduate education and getting into graduate school and jobs sooner.”
Students like Jessica Carter, a junior from Charlottesville, Va., enjoy focusing on one or two classes a month during summer terms. Although each class lasts nearly two hours every weekday, students like the chance to complete a class in a month and at a quicker pace.
Carter, who is double majoring in music and biology, also participated as a cast member in this year’s summer musical production, “Annie Get Your Gun.” Nearly 60 students comprised the cast, crew and orchestra.
Students can still sign up for August term. Courses are offered at the rate of $205 per credit hour.
