Students Picked to Represent National Group at DC Meeting
Two student association leaders from Southern Virginia University were selected to represent the American Student Government Association this week at a meeting in Washington, D.C., to discuss prescription drug abuse prevention.
The goal of the meeting, sponsored by the National Council on Patient Information and Education and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, is to lay the foundation for the creation of an online tool kit to help prevent prescription drug abuse among college students.
Student Association President Derick Maggard and Vice President of Operations Jessi Gibbons were selected to represent the American Student Government Association at the meeting.
Maggard, a transfer student from the Prescott, Ariz., is studying politics. He is a senior at Southern Virginia and plans to attend law school next fall.
Gibbons, from Buena Vista, Va., is a senior studying biology. After graduation, she wants to teach high school biology and eventually hopes to open a liberal arts high school to prepare students for college.
“I thought that this would be a great opportunity to hear how other colleges and organizations deal with drug abuse problems on campuses with no honor code.” Gibbons said. “I thought this would be a beneficial experience and a way to open up my eyes to alternative solutions to problems that all colleges encounter.”
