SVU Art Professor Receives International Recognition

Southern Virginia University art professor Barbara Crawford is the featured artist this month at exhibits in Assisi, Italy, and Lewisburg, West Virginia.

“I’m honored and exhilarated to have my work hosted at these two locations,” Crawford said. “My art echoes the Lexington and Buena Vista area, and I want to share that with the world.”

This month, Crawford’s work will be featured in a two-person show as part of the May Festival in Assisi. Exhibiting with Crawford will be renowned artist Paola Ruggiero. The show will feature Crawford’s series “The Anatomy of Light” and Ruggiero’s “The Interior of the Circle.”

A one-person exhibition of Crawford’s series “A Vivid Darkness,” is at the Carnegie Hall Center for the Arts in Lewisburg, West Virginia. In this exhibition she uses urban architectural images, based on scenes of Buena Vista, as signifiers of social structure.

Crawford, a professor of art and art history, has exhibited in over 40 one-person, invitational or juried shows. This June and July she also will be the visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome and in August at the Tyrone Guthrie Center for the Arts in Ireland. She recently finished a residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts at Sweet Briar.
