Southern Virginia University Announces Appointment of New Interim Dean of Admissions

Southern Virginia University Vice President of Student Life and Enrollment Walt Ralls today announced the appointment of Jody Mask as the new interim dean of admissions.

Tony Caputo, who served as dean of admissions for nine years, stepped down this week to begin working as a recruiter and coach.

“Tony has done a phenomenal job helping us increase enrollment at Southern Virginia,” Vice President Ralls said. “We’ve gone from 70 students to 700, which is no small feat in the competitive world of higher education.”

Caputo, who has taught and coached at high schools and at Southern Virginia, came to the University as director of continuing education in 1998. He also served as assistant dean of admissions and acting director of admissions before being named dean of admissions in 1999.

“I loved serving as dean, but I’m excited to shift the focus of my contribution to SVU by engaging students more directly,” Caputo said. “This change will allow me to recruit and coach and I look forward to getting started.”

Jody Mask served briefly as an admissions counselor at Southern Virginia. Prior to that he owned and operated a law practice in Texas and worked as a trial attorney for nine years. He has a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and graduated cum laude with a B.S. from Texas A&M University.

“What’s happening at Southern Virginia in terms of its growth is truly exciting,” Mask said. “We have a great team in the admissions office and I am thrilled to work with them in this capacity to help more students find their way to the spiritually nourishing and academically challenging opportunities awaiting them here.”

Mask will assume his responsibilities immediately.
